The Red Sox and Yankees rivalry never gets old. Ever since Boston traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees 100 years ago and the Curse of the Bambino was born there is always something stoking the fire between these two. This time it was Boston's Christian Vasquez talking trash on Instagram Live. His message was directed at one baseball's best pitchers in Gerrit Cole, as Vasquez proclaimed, “I'm ready for Gerrit Cole. He doesn't want to face us right now.”

Cole finished the 2021 campaign with a quality 3.23 ERA. It was far from his best season but he was still an intricate part of leading New York to the postseason.

One has to wonder what led Vasquez to call out Cole in this manner. Maybe he was trying to excite the Red Sox fan base and get them pumped up for the season. But the question needs to be asked, does Vasquez have the right to call out Cole like this? In surprising fashion, the Boston catcher has actually been quite good against the Yankees ace. Vasquez owns a very respectable .294 batting average with a double and an RBI in his career vs. Cole.

The Yankees and Red Sox are expected to compete with one another in the deep American League East once again in 2022. The teams both finished behind the Tampa Rays last year and had to face off in the Wild Card game. The Red Sox ultimately defeated the Yankees in the Wild Card and sent New York home. Cole and the Yankees will be looking for revenge while Vasquez and the Sox will try to take care of business against their rivals for a second straight season.
