The Washington Redskins suffered through another injury-hit campaign from Jordan Reed in 2017. The talented but seemingly perpetually banged-up tight end played just six games last season due to a fractured toe, which then led to hip and leg problems stemming from his overcompensation of that toe injury.

But as ESPN’s John Keim reports, Jay Gruden says Reed has had a procedure done to repair that toe problem and that he’s hopeful Reed returns to full strength by training camp.

However, it’s hard to envision a scenario where Reed is completely healthy given his checkered past when it comes to injuries. He’s never played a full 16-game NFL season in his entire five-year career due to a variety of different ailments.

It’s a shame Reed just can’t seem to find a way to stay on the field. When he’s functioning at anywhere close to 100 percent, he’s one of the most talented tight ends in the entire league. He showed exactly that in 2015, when he racked up 87 catches for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns in a career-high 14 games.

Reed would be an ideal weapon for new Redskins quarterback Alex Smith, who had a lot of success connecting with Travis Kelce during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs. Hopefully for Washington, Reed comes back from his injury-hit year and provides Smith with another capable receiving threat in 2018.

Unfortunately, his poor track record with injuries doesn’t provide for much optimism that he can truly put together a completely healthy season, which is a shame for both him and the team.
