The search for the Washington-based team's new name may be tougher than expected. After the strong clamor for the moniker change, the team's front office immediately heeded the call. Team owner Dan Snyder and new head coach Ron Rivera are currently spearheading the search and have yet to come up with a final decision.
According to the Morning Consult:
Of the 18 options provided in a new Morning Consult poll, only two received more positive feedback than negative feedback among sports fans: Washington Warriors, which 47 percent of sports fans liked, and Washington Redhawks, which 43 percent liked. Red Wolves (38 percent), Renegades (34 percent) and Generals (33 percent) rounded out the top five.
The ‘Warriors' monicker seems to be the favorite but the 47 percent that it accounted for still isn't a true majority. It was then followed by ‘Red Tails' and ‘Americans'.
During the offseason, a stockpile of issues came back to light on the Redskins. Due to the team's alleged racist name, corporate partners in Nike, FedEx, and PepsiCo yielded pressure towards the organization to act upon the matter quickly. A few weeks later, a report by the Washington Post revealed that 15 women claimed to have been victims of sexual harassment while working for the organization.
Despite a rocky offseason, the team is looking forward to moving on to their bid for a bounce back season with head coach Ron Rivera at the helm. The team is scheduled to play its first game of the upcoming season at home against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 13.
But before that, they'll need to move on from their old Redskins moniker, and most importantly the misogynistic work environment that previously existed.
Washington football can only go up from here.
