The Washington Redskins suffered a devastating blow with a gruesome leg injury to quarterback Alex Smith. They will now look to backup quarterback Colt McCoy to help them finish the 2018 NFL season on a high note.

There is plenty of speculation regarding McCoy's ability to lead the offense. According to ESPN's John Keim, he is confident about the opportunity:

“I’ve grown up. I’ve grown up a lot,” McCoy said. “I feel comfortable in this system and how we execute our offense.”

It is encouraging to see McCoy so optimistic about his ability. There is certainly good reason for him to be confident. He has a strong grasp of the playbook since he has been in Washington since 2014. His comfortability in the offense showed on Sunday after he completed 6-of-12 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown following Smith's injury.

McCoy certainly has some experience as a starter. He began his career as a potential future franchise quarterback for the Cleveland Browns after starting in 21 games in his first two seasons. However, he soon became the backup in Washington after things went south in Cleveland. He will now be making his fifth start for the Redskins on a short week versus the Dallas Cowboys.

McCoy will be tasked with helping Washington maintain its one-game lead in the NFC East. That makes this week's matchup versus the second-place Cowboys a crucial one. If McCoy is unable to do the job, they will be forced to rely on their newly-signed backup quarterback Mark Sanchez.
