Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has been a fixture down in Miami since his retirement. It appears he has added a new member to the club in Washington Redskins tight end Vernon Davis.

Davis opted to announce his retirement in a rather clever fashion during a Super Bowl pregame show alongside Gronkowski and former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison, via Jake Kring-Schreifels of Yankees Magazine:

Davis started his career as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Although it took him some time to fit the billing as a former first-round pick, he eventually emerged into one of the most versatile receiving options in the league.

Davis' rare combination of size and speed made him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. As a result, he earned two trips to the Pro Bowl and an All-Pro selection while serving as a safety net for both Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick in the passing game. He also played a vital role in the 49ers Super Bowl run and even capped it off with six catches for 104 yards in the narrow 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Davis ultimately managed to add a Super Bowl ring to his trophy case with the Denver Broncos. While he played a minor role during the championship run, his stint in Denver did help serve as a launching pad for a minor resurgence with the Washington Redskins. His decision to make the announcement in this fashion is a sign that he is welcoming retirement with open arms.
