The Washington Redskins seem to be on the cusp of making some notable changes to their roster this offseason. Wide receiver Paul Richardson can now be added to the list of casualties under the new regime with head coach Ron Rivera.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Redskins have released Richardson.
The team has wasted no time in cutting ties with a few loose ends this offseason after already parting ways with cornerback Josh Norman. Norman's tenure in Washington started with a bang after signing a record-breaking five-year, $75 million contract in 2016 following until it ended in tumultuous fashion in the 2019 NFL season.
Unfortunately, that would not be the last of their questionable spending. Although Richardson had largely served as a complementary option in the passing game for the Seattle Seahawks to start his career, Washington still offered him a five-year, $40 million deal prior to the 2018 campaign. To no surprise, he has since struggled to provide them with any bang for their buck after registering just 48 receptions for 507 yards and four touchdowns in 17 games during his two seasons with the team.
Richardson may not have emerged into a bonafide No. 1 option like Washington had hoped, however, he could still provide some quality depth for teams looking to fortify their receiving corps this offseason. The change in scenery could be just what he needs to help spark a potential resurgence as well.
Meanwhile, Washington still has a number of voids to fill on their roster before the 2020 NFL season. Richardson's release will save them $2.5 million in salary cap to help with the efforts.
