When the Chicago Cubs and veteran manager Joe Maddon decided to part ways at the end of the 2019 regular season, it was assumed that Maddon would have his pick of jobs.

There are six other teams in search of a new manager this offseason, including the organization where Maddon first got his start in coaching.

Indeed, the Los Angeles Angels will interview Maddon early this week, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic:

The Angels fired former manager Brad Ausmus almost as soon as it was announced that Maddon would be available, and the two sides have been linked for some time now because of Maddon's ties to the organization. He was even a minor league player with the Angels before turning to coaching.

Maddon had one of the most successful five-year runs of any manager in history. He is the winningest Cubs manager in the live-ball era (by winning percentage), and he will forever be remembered in Chicago for helping the team end a 108-year championship drought in 2016.

However, Maddon and Cubs president Theo Epstein eventually felt that change was necessary after a season in which their philosophical differences became more and more evident.

Los Angeles offers an intriguing opportunity for Maddon. He would have the chance to coach the best player in the game in Mike Trout, and Angels general manager Billy Eppler has said that the team will look to be active in free agency.

It would not be a surprise if the Angels hired Maddon by the end of next week.
