It's been an emotional ride for Pau Gasol and the rest of Spain‘s national men's basketball team in the Rio Olympics.

Gasol nearly skipped out on the games due to nagging injuries and a fear of the Zika virus. Eventually, the newest member of the San Antonio Spurs decided to make the trip.

Then, Spain shockingly lost their first two games of the preliminary round by a total of three points. Critics began counting them out, despite the fact that they reached the Gold medal game in each of the last two Olympics'. Both games came down to the final few minutes before Team USA pulled away.

The Spaniards responded, winning their next three games in pool play before dismantling France in the quarterfinals. Now, they're ready to battle with a familiar foe in Team USA.

Unfortunately, they might have to do so without Pau, who's dealing with a calf injury that flared up against France.

Here's head coach Sergio Scariolo's statement on the matter from Gigantes, translated by Eurohoops:

“He is not well, I can not say for sure that he is going to play,” said Spain's head coach, Sergio Scariolo. “We continue with his treatments and the truth is that we needed him right now. We hope his condition to evolve well and at least be ready to help as much as he can his teammates in the game. I can not say anything more right now.”

On the bright side, the Spanish national team was able to take down the French while Gasol was hampered by his calf. In 23 minutes, Pau only managed five points.

Spain is already without Pau's brother, star center Marc Gasol. He wasn't able to participate as he continues to recover from a broken foot suffered in February.

If they're able to defeat the Americans without either of the Gasol brothers, the parties in Madrid and Barcelona will go well into the night. But it's going to be very tough.
