After Mick Jagger scared fans, the Rolling Stones have seemingly made a permanent setlist change on their 2024 “Hackney Diamonds” tour.
Since the Stones' June 7 show in Atlanta, Georgia, they have dropped “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” from the encore. This and Jagger's extended absence during Keith Richards' mini-set, caused fans to speculate about the singer's health.
Instead of Richards getting two songs, he is now playing three before the Rolling Stones play a sequence of their greatest hits to close out the main show. These songs include “Tell Me Straight,” “Little T&A,” and “Happy.”
In turn, the encore only consists of “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.” At the first nine concerts of the “Hackney Diamonds” tour, the Stones played “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” before it in the encore.
“Sweet Sounds of Heaven” is the second single from Hackney Diamonds and was recorded with Lady Gaga. The Rolling Stones played it with Lady Gaga in October 2023.
It is unclear why the song has been dropped and Richards' role has increased. Perhaps this is being done to preserve Jagger's voice. Or, it is possible that they grew tired of it.
After all, fans are going to see the Rolling Stones for their greatest hits. They have been together for over six decades with countless hits in their back catalog. Despite being the Rolling Stones' tour namesake, Hackney Diamonds is not the priority of the tour's setlist.
The Rolling Stones 2024 “Hackney Diamonds” tour
The Rolling Stones' 2024 “Hackney Diamonds” tour is their first since 2022's “Sixty.” That tour was meant to commemorate the band's sixtieth anniversary.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood are all present for the tour. They are joined by Darryl Jones, Chanel Haynes, and more in their backing band.
20 total shows are planned for the “Hackney Diamonds” tour. The tour commenced on April 28, 2024, with a show in Houston, Texas. They followed that up with a headlining show at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. As of now, the tour is set to conclude with a show at the Thunder Ridge Nature Arena in Ridgedale, Missouri.
What is Hackney Diamonds?
Their current tour is named after their latest studio album. Hackney Diamonds is the first album of original music from the Rolling Stones since 2005's A Bigger Bang. The band released Blue and Lonesome, an album of blues covers, in 2016.
Hackney Diamonds is also the first album from the Stones since the death of drummer Charlie Watts. However, he was able to contribute to some of the tracks in 2019 before his death. Andrew Watts served as the primary producer of the album.
In turn, the Rolling Stones enlisted the help of other legends such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, and former Stones bassist Bill Wyman.
To promote the album, the band released three singles. “Angry” was the first and was released on September 6, 2023, over a month before the album's release. “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” and “Mess it Up” followed on September 28 and October 20, respectively.
