New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is good friends with Gerald McCoy and would love to see the recently released defense tackle join hin. It seems probable that McCoy will want to join a contender, so joining the Saints would make a lot of sense.

“He’s a stud,” Brees said of McCoy, via KATC (Lafayette). “He’s a great player. I mean, you’re basically asking me if I would love having a Pro Bowl defensive tackle that I’ve spent the last eight years trying to run around and avoid and not have hit me join our team. Yeah, of course.”'

Brees and McCoy have become close the last couple of offseasons spending time together training and it would make a lot of sense for McCoy to join the squad.

The Saints have a big need on the defensive line, especially with some question marks heading into the season. Sheldon Rankins was key for the Saints last year but it's expected that he will start the season still sidelined recovering from an Achilles injury. Reserve David Onyemata could also be suspended after being cited for marijuana possession back in January.

It's unclear if McCoy has interest in signing with the Saints but Brees should be a draw if there is some interest. McCoy is one of the best defensive tackles in the league and six times has been graded one of the top 25 defensive players in the league by Pro Football Focus.

Look for this news story to update in the next few days, as McCoy shouldn't stay on the open market long.
