After missing out on acquiring Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans, the New Orleans Saints opted to re-sign quarterback Jameis Winston on a two-year deal last month.

After years of not having to deal with question marks at the quarterback position because of Drew Brees’ standing with the team, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis faced a notable dilemma this past month regarding which passer the team should acquire in free agency. In the end, as he touched on over the NFL owners meeting, Loomis is pleased to have brought back Winston for two more seasons.

“We haven't been in that market very often, so it was a little different in that there were some guys available via trade,” Loomis said.

“But I don't think that happens every year. And then obviously there were some free agents. And look, we love what Jameis has done for us and we wanted to keep him as well. And yet he was a free agent, so there's a lot of uncertainty going into this offseason. But I'm happy where we landed.”

Winston’s 2021 campaign was cut short after he suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury during the Saints’ Week 8 clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Overall, Winston has not had any notable setbacks in his injury recovery process. He returned to running activities in late February, and as he noted earlier this week, he is “ahead of schedule” and on track to be “back well before training camp.”

The Saints capped off regular season play last year with a 9-8 record.
