The Seattle Seahawks are looking for a new offensive coordinator after parting ways with Brian Schottenheimer, and former New York Jets head coach Adam Gase is in the running.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported the Seahawks have spoken with Gase about the opening, and also plan to reach out to Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka.
How will Gase's candidacy resonate with Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson?
The Pro Bowl quarterback said recently he hopes to have “significant” input in the hiring process so as to get on page with the new OC. Will he sign off on a hiring as polarizing as Gase?
Granted, Gase has had more success as an offensive coordinator than as a head coach. He had an excellent track record as a receivers and quarterbacks coach in Denver, ultimately taking the OC job with the Broncos ahead of the 2013 season. That offense broke records, as Peyton Manning set the single-season record for touchdowns. The Broncos also ranked second in scoring in 2014, with Gase guiding one of the most dynamic offensive units in football.
However, Gase's career has taken a turn for the worse. After a brief stop in Chicago in 2015, Gase took over as head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2016. The Dolphins went 10-6, but ranked just 17th in scoring.
Gase was 13-19 over the course of the next two years in Miami. His next stop was New York, where failure to establish a rapport with young quarterback Sam Darnold played a role in the team's 2-14 mark this past season. Gase also struggled to develop relationships with stars like Le'Veon Bell and Jamal Adams before the two were shipped away from the Jets.
Perhaps Gase would have more success calling plays for the Seahawks, considering they have an established franchise QB in Wilson and loads of talent at the skill positions.
Still, Wilson himself will likely want to sign off on Gase's hiring.
