The Seattle Seahawks' dismantling of their once dominant defense continued on Friday afternoon when they announced the release of Cliff Avril following a failed physical designation.

Avril started his career in 2008 with the Detroit Lions, playing with them until 2013 when he came over to the Seahawks.

Last year, he only played four games before suffering a serious neck injury. He had surgery to repair the nerve damage, and it's still unclear if he will ever be able to play again. The Seahawks made it clear when he was hurt that if he wanted to play again, it would have to be with another team, so this was a long time coming. In January, Avril was asked by the NFL Network if he wanted to continue playing, and he said he hopes to.

“I believe so,” Avril said in an interview with Steve Wyche of the NFL Network. “Right now it’s all about recovery. I had surgery. I’m in the process of recovering. It’s a long process, a long journey. When I get to the end of that, then I’ll figure out what’s next.

“I mean, it’s something I love to do,” Avril said. “It’s what I’ve been doing forever and, just as a competitor, I want to show that I can come back if it’s possible, you know? You do see all the injuries. You see the game from a different perspective when you’re on the sideline. And those thoughts do definitely pop into my head of ‘should I come back or not?’ But again, right now it’s all about recovery.”

It will be interesting to see how Avril feels now that he has been released. As a competitor, Avril will do likely everything in his power to get back on the field.
