Initial tests on Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid did not show a fracture of his shoulder, per the Sixers.

Embiid suffered a left shoulder sprain on Wednesday in the Sixers’ loss to the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers:

Embiid played just eight minutes before exiting. He recently returned from a hand injury that required surgery.

The Sixers are an elite team at home and a below-average team on the road. There’s no excuse for Philly to lose to the Cavs on the road, even without Ben Simmons and Embiid.  The Sixers are now 36-23 on the season after dropping to Cleveland.

Embiid is averaging 23.3 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists on the season. He’s shooting 47.2 percent from the field, 34.2 percent from beyond the arc and 81.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Sixers fans are hoping that Embiid’s injury isn’t a long-term issue given the team’s piling injuries. Another surgery for Embiid would be a huge buzzkill.

Most pundits around the league expect Philly to trade either Simmons or Embiid after the season ends if the Sixers don’t go on a deep playoff run. Since both players do their damage in the post (with Simmons lacking the ability to shoot), the Sixers have a shortage of floor spacing when the two All-Stars are on the court together.

The 76ers have lost in the second round of the playoffs the last two seasons. Head coach Brett Brown could possibly lose his job as well if Philly falters early in the postseason again.
