The Philadelphia 76ers have had a blazing hot start to the 2023-24 season, winning seven straight games after losing their season opener to the Milwaukee Bucks. A big reason for that was due to the strong play of Kelly Oubre Jr., but the Sixers and their fans were dealt quite a scare when it was revealed that Oubre had been involved in a car accident that sent him to the hospital.

Oubre had been walking as a pedestrian when he was hit by a car, which unsurprisingly yielded a trip to the hospital. Oubre was in stable condition, and ended up getting released on Saturday night, but it was clear he would miss some time with his injuries. Reports have come out indicating that Oubre suffered broken ribs and quite a few cuts and bruises as a result of the incident, which will cause him to miss some time for Philadelphia moving forward.

“Sources: 76ers G/F Kelly Oubre Jr. sustained broken ribs and an assortment of bruises and cuts to his body after being struck by a car in Philadelphia on Saturday night. Oubre fortunately avoided more serious injuries, but will now miss significant time.”

Team medical personnel will re-evaluate Oubre's injuries in one week, according to ESPN's Tim Bontemps.

The Sixers will miss Kelly Oubre Jr. during his absence

First and foremost, Oubre's well-being obviously take priority here, and he thankfully appears to be in good health despite this scary incident. From a basketball perspective, though, the Sixers are going to miss Oubre's strong two-way abilities on the court. There isn't a timeframe for Oubre's return, but he is going to be given all the time he needs in order to get himself fully healthy.

Oubre will likely miss a few months as he recovers from these injuries, and given the circumstances, he is fortunate to not have suffered more severe injuries. Oubre should be able to return at some point later this season, but the 76ers will now have to figure out how to overcome his absence for however long he is forced to miss.
