During the rebuilding process for the Philadelphia 76ers, they have drafted the best player available instead of best fit. As a result, the 76ers selected Nerlens Noel (2013), Joel Embiid (2014), and Jahlil Okafor (2015) three consecutive years.

With Embiid establishing himself as the face of the franchise, Philadelphia traded Noel to the Dallas Mavericks last season and have been trying to trade Okafor. As Okafor's name has been in trade rumors for more than a year, they have decided not to pick up his fourth-year option for the 2018-19 NBA season according to Kyle Neubeck of The Philly Voice:

After being the third overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and playing well his rookie season, this has been a surprising development for Okafor. Even with Embiid only appearing in 37 career games up to this point, head coach Brett Brown has gone with Richaun Holmes and Amir Johnson as his primary backup at the center position.

While Okafor can still be traded during the 2017-18 NBA season, his future in Philadelphia will end one way or another. As Okafor's defense will need to improve, there will be teams who will take a chance on the 21-year-old's potential in free agency.

Okafor has appeared in one game this season, finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks in 22 minutes.
