The Philadelphia 76ers are preparing for their fifth-straight playoff run, which kicks off Saturday night in Game 1 against the Toronto Raptors. Even with the postseason tournament starting up, the regular season is still very relevant to Philadelphia.
Joel Embiid finished the season as the 2021-2022 Scoring Champion and is in the running for the regular season MVP award. He averaged 30.6 points, 4.2 assists, and 11.7 rebounds in 68 games.
The Sixers center worked his tail off to put his team in the best possible position to win a championship. And, in the process (no pun intended, maybe), he built a solid resume to compete for the MVP title. While Embiid is focused on that and his team's playoff success, teammate Tobias Harris is putting even more expectations on the Sixers' big man.
Harris spoke of Embiid's MVP candidacy, vowed for him to win the regular-season award, and even challenged him to earn the championship MVP title.
Sixers team reporter Lauren Rosen tweeted Harris' high expectations Friday afternoon.
At this point, there's nothing that Embiid can do about the regular-season MVP award. And, a lot has to happen before he can even be considered for the championship honor. The Sixers have to make it to the 2022 NBA Finals. In other words, if Harris expects Embiid to win that one, he has some work to do too.
The Sixers will host the Raptors Saturday night in their first game of Round 1.
