On Sunday evening, the Philadelphia 76ers improved to 8-1 on the young 2023-24 NBA season with a 137-126 home victory over the Indiana Pacers. One player whom Indiana was powerless to stop was breakout Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey, who scored an unbelievable 50 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists in 39 minutes of playing time.

After the game, Maxey dedicated the performance to Sixers' teammate Kelly Oubre Jr., who was injured in a car accident the previous day.

“Man, this had nothing to do with me. This is all Kelly Oubre, man,” said Maxey, per Hoop Central on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “We're praying for him… Love my dawg. I hope he gets well soon.”

Kelly Oubre Jr. was struck by a vehicle on Saturday evening in Philadelphia and was then transported to the hospital in stable condition, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Thankfully, Oubre has since been released from the hospital but is expected to miss a significant amount of playing time for the Sixers as the season progresses.

Tyrese Maxey, meanwhile, has enjoyed a breakout start to the 2023-24 campaign, establishing himself as a legitimate candidate to be a number two option next to Joel Embiid in the wake of James Harden's departure to the Los Angeles Clippers. After dropping their first game of the season to the Milwaukee Bucks, the Sixers have now won eight straight contests, vaulting up to first place in the Eastern Conference. They will next take the floor against the Pacers once again on November 14.
