PHILADELPHIA — Kelly Oubre Jr.'s impressive season with the Philadelphia 76ers has been put on pause after he was struck by a car on Saturday night. Although he is fortunately back home and didn’t sustain any season-ending or life-threatening injuries, the Sixers were shaken up to see one of their teammates go through something so scary.

Nick Nurse said that Oubre is back home resting and that he hopes to have him back around the team on Tuesday. The Sixers went out and won their most recent game for him over the Indiana Pacers thanks to a 50-point outing from Tyrese Maxey and another strong Joel Embiid performance. Oubre and the recovery he has to embark on remained fresh on their minds.

“Yeah, it's hard man. It's really hard, honestly,” Maxey said. “When I got the news, like, honestly I thought it wasn't real. I didn't think it was real. But I shot him a text as soon as possible, as soon as I could. You know, it hurts, man. That's sad, man. It's a sad deal. But we're really happy that that was…a minor injury, you know, 'cause of what could have happened. So, man, we just wanna show our love to him, tell him we love him. Shout out to K.O. He's a fighter so we know he'll be okay and we can't wait to see him.”

Maxey gave a shoutout to Oubre in his postgame interview, capping off the best game of his career to date by wishing his teammate well. Nurse said that the team tried to connect Oubre to the postgame locker room via FaceTime but that they couldn’t get through, so they took a video for him instead.

“I just want to make sure that he was good 'cause you never know with those types of things,” Embiid said when asked about Oubre after the game. “It's just unfortunate it just shows you that it could happen to any of us. He's super unlucky but I'm glad that it wasn't too bad because it could have been worse.”

Tobias Harris said it was “extremely important” for the Sixers to get the win after Oubre's accident.

Nico Batum started in Oubre's place while Danuel House Jr. stepped into the rotation to provide more wing depth off the bench. The Sixers are equipped to handle having one of their rotation players miss time (just as they did when Batum had to step away due to a personal matter) but certainly wish they could flaunt their entire team's talent at once.

“We know we miss K.O. That's a huge loss for us,” Batum said.Wish him the best and we want him back soon, but now we need guys to step up and a couple guys did it tonight off the bench as well. So, that was a good team win.”

The Sixers will be without Oubre for a good bit. He will be re-evaluated next week but with a fractured rib and injuries to his hip and right leg, it's uncertain when he'll be cleared again. For the time being, they will have to stay resilient and look to keep their win streak going while Oubre works to bounce back.

“We were all thinking about him and we just want him to take his time and recover and we got his back. But like you saw tonight, he's needed. He's been a big part of us since we started. We missed him a lot tonight,” Embiid said. But he should take his time and recover. And we're gonna be waiting for him.”
