Get ready, Gotham. The Penguin has won over Sky.

Deadline reports that Sky’s pay-TV network in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy will air the Max Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios drama in one of its biggest deals. This will allow fans worldwide to check out the upcoming feature in Matt Reeves’s The Batman World.

Sky bought this as its second purchase recently. It just picked up all the seasons of The Walking Dead, along with spin-offs.

Kate Keenan, Sky’s Group Director of Acquisitions, described the series as “arguably DC’s answer to The Sopranos.”

She added, “The Penguin will add to our roster of tentpole shows as we aim to provide our customers with the best U.S. programming in addition to our impressive lineup of Sky original TV series and films.”

About The Penguin

The series stars Colin Farrell as the title character and Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, a greedy criminal. It also stars Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone), Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Rhenzy Feliz, and Victor Aguilar. It’s based on characters for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.

Additionally, Robert Pattinson’s Batman is rumored to be in the series, but no details have been given. Considering the connection, it would make sense to include him from time to time—even if he’s not a regular.

ScreenRant reports that The Penguin will follow the character’s story after the first film and show Gotham City from the Penguin’s perspective. Penguin is one of Batman’s biggest villains in the Dark Knight universe, and it’s great to see a larger role for the iconic character. It’s bound to be a massive part of DC and Matt Reeves. Reeves and Dylan Clark will serve as executive producers. Lauren LeFranc, known for her contribution to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., will be the writer.

A teaser indicates that the series will discuss Cobbleplot’s attempts to gain power. When The Batman movie ended, we saw The Riddler flood Gotham, so expect the series to pick up from here.

Meanwhile, THR reported that Craig Zobel, known for his work on Mare of Easttown, will be helming the first two episodes.

Zobel has had quite a wild few years. His Universal and Blumhouse film The Hunt was canceled in 2019 amid controversy. It was revived for a March 2020 release as one of the last films to open before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The show is well underway; filming was wrapped up in February 2024. It is all coming together thanks to The Batman’s success. Other productions, like Batgirl, fell by the wayside following the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery. Luckily, The Penguin is all setup and ready to unleash terror upon Gotham.

The new series will be released on Max sometime later this year. The exact date is unknown at this time.
