Borussia Dortmund and USMNT standout Gio Reyna will miss the rest of the European season with a torn tendon in his leg. Reyna was subbed off minutes into Dortmund's 2-0 win over Stuttgart on Friday because of a right hamstring injury. On Saturday, the team announced he will miss the remainder of the campaign. Dortmund currently sit in second in Germany's Bundesliga, but are nine points behind first place Bayern Munich.
For Reyna and the USMNT however, this setback could have been much worse. With the 2022 World Cup taking place in late-fall instead of the summer, Reyna should be available for Gregg Berhalter's side. The US men's team will face England, Iran, and the winner of Scotland/Ukraine vs. Wales in the group stage of the competition. If the Americans are to make a run in the knockout stages, they'll need Reyna at full strength.
Reyna's lingering hamstring issues have led him to miss most of Dortmund's club season this year. Initially injuring himself on international duty in September, Reyna has encountered numerous setbacks. The promising midfielder, who's been with Dortmund since 2020, took to Instagram following the latest injury.
“‘Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations'. Hard to put into words the way I feel right now. Thank you for all the support! I’ll be back and better than ever! 🤍”
Dortmund's Reyna joins a contingent of USMNT players who are dealing with injuries ahead of the country's first World Cup appearance since 2014. Weston McKennie broke a bone in his foot during a Champions League match with Juventus in February, ruling him out for the remainder of the club season. Meanwhile Brenden Aaronson, Sergino Dest, and Chris Richards have all missed chunks of matches due to injury. Fortunately for the USMNT, these injuries shouldn't impact the 2022 World Cup squad.
