The iconic “Hand of God” moment from the 1986 World Cup when Diego Maradona scored against England in the quarterfinals will go down as one of the most historic moments ever. And now, that Argentina jersey Maradona wore just sold for a world-record $9.28 million at an auction in London, per ESPN.

This surpasses Babe Ruth's game-worn jersey from 1928-1930 which sold for just over $5 million. Before this Diego Maradona jersey broke the record, an Olympic manifesto was the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia at $8.8 million.

Argentina's victory over England in 86′ was truly the Maradona show. The “Hand of God” goal put his side ahead early on when the legend palmed the ball past England keeper Peter Shilton:

However, Diego Maradona wowed the crowd with his game-winner which is widely considered the goal of the century. The former Napoli man received the ball at the halfway mark of the pitch and literally took on the entire English midfield and defense before dragging the ball past Shilton and slotting home. Maradona actually swapped shirts with England's Steve Hodge at the time, but he refused to take offers for it and eventually put the jersey in the National Football Museum in 2002.

Maradona passed away in November of 2020 which shocked the entire footballing community, but he'll undoubtedly go down as one of the best to ever grace a pitch. Clearly whoever bought his jersey thinks the same considering they paid almost $10 million.
