The 2022 MLS season is in full swing and the Philadelphia Union is undefeated after two games. Philadelphia looks to keep this streak going Saturday night in their matchup against the San Jose Earthquakes. The two teams haven't faced one another since September of 2019.

Despite the Earthquakes' early winless record, Union head coach Jim Curtain is cautiously optimistic heading into the upcoming matchup. Curtain discussed the early-season game in his press conference on Thursday, quotes courtesy of Brotherly Game.

“It’s a unique opponent and it’s one that we don’t get the luxury of playing too often…One thing that always is true is they always, always create chances and they create opportunities on the offensive side. Sometimes they take a lot of risks, sometimes they leave themselves exposed at the back and they play man for man. They’re a team that when they’re clicking and the talent that they have in the attacking pieces they can be very, very dangerous.”

The longtime Union coach has every right to be cautious. Since 2012, the two teams have faced one another 12 times. In the dozen games against the Earthquakes, the Union is 4-4-4, per Transfer Markt. In other words, the two clubs are extremely even opponents for one another.

However, he seems to have the Earthquakes' gameplay figured out. As Curtain mentioned, San Jose's risky style of play is often their own weakness. If the Union can capitalize on the Earthquakes' risky mistakes Saturday night, they should come home with a win to continue their early-season success.
