The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the most injury-plagued teams in the entire 2017-18 NBA season. Yet, they have still managed to maintain their stronghold near the top of the juggernaut Western Conference.
As a result, Toronto Raptors star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan is not taking them lightly in Friday night's matchup at the Air Canada Centre. DeRozan even suggested head coach Gregg Popovich could assemble a lineup of reporters and still find a way to win, according to Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports:
“With Pop and the way he orchestrates and puts guys in there, he could put five of y’all out there and coach y’all to some type of victory.”
DeRozan added that he is still perplexed to this day as to how “Pop” has managed to rely on his team's depth all these years.
“I don’t know. Pop knows something we don’t know. Because I’ve been watching them my whole career, being a fan of his resume growing up. It’s amazing how he do it. I have no clue how he do it. Hopefully one day I can ask him”
It is interesting to see such high praise for Popovich from DeRozan. Spurs extremists would even go so far as to take that as an indication he would like to play in San Antonio.
Fortunately for the Raptors, DeRozan may not need to do so after being named as a starter for the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. With the new format, there is a very good chance he gets a word in with “Pop” as a potential head coach for one of the teams.
