The Pittsburgh Steelers have already clinched a bye entering the final week of the 2017 NFL season. Given the few playoff implications at stake, questions have been posed about how the Steelers will approach their season finale.
Right tackle Marcus Gilbert took it upon himself to give an update on whether his star teammates will play this week. According to Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Gilbert said veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and superstar running back Le'Veon Bell will be unavailable for Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns:
“Ben's not there so they'll get a little taste of Landry Jones. So we don't know what to expect from them.”
More Gilbert:”We'll have Landry Jones in there. We won't have Ben. or 8-4[Antonio Brown]. Or LeVeon Bell.”
The designation for both players comes as no surprise. Although the Steelers have a chance of clinching home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win over the Browns and a New England Patriots loss, it clearly did not outweigh potential injuries to two of the most important players on their offense, along with Antonio Brown.
That said, Gilbert will be more than happy to get back on the field after completing a four-game suspension. However, they may face a stiff test against a Cleveland team desperate to avoid going 0-16 on the year.
