The free-agent market on safety Tyrann Mathieu has heated up in recent weeks, as the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, and most recently, the Los Angeles Rams, have shown interest in the services of the All-Pro defensive back. Another team has entered the Mathieu sweepstakes- the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers.com writer Bob Labriola reports that Pittsburgh is interested in Mathieu, but there's a catch.

The Steelers have an interest in signing Tyrann Mathieu, and they would have enough cap space to sign him to a two-year contract for what they believe he is worth. The issue is whether Mathieu agrees with the Steelers' assessment about what he is worth.

Per Labriola, the Steelers have interest in Mathieu and could have the resources to sign him to a two-year deal, though they would only bring him in for “what they believe he is worth.”

While that sounds like the reasoning a team would use with any player, it's noteworthy because it shows Pittsburgh isn't willing to break the bank at the position, even after losing the likes of Terrell Edmunds via free agency.

Mathieu, 29, would be a huge get for the Steelers, as he made the Pro Bowl three times while thrice earning All-Pro honors. He has intercepted 13 passes in three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and would certainly bring an elite playmaking presence to the back end of the defense.
