There was some mystery surrounding Sean Davis' absence from a week of training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But considering that the team announced his missed time was due to a hand injury and elected against elaborating further, the assumption was the fourth-year safety wasn't feeling much pain – and could perhaps even return to the field relatively soon.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin confirmed otherwise on Wednesday, unfortunately, saying that Davis still has an “open wound” on his hand, per team reporter Missi Matthews. Tomlin also alluded to a false sense among some that Davis was being kept out of practice for precautionary measures.

Davis sustained the injury during Pittsburgh's first padded practice on July 28. Tomlin initially provided little information about his status.

“That finger is being evaluated,” he said of Davis, per Chris Adamski of TribLIVE. “Maybe a dislocation.”

A second-round pick in 2016, Davis entered training camp as the Steelers' starter at free safety. He started all 16 games last season, finishing with 90 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, and eight passes defensed. The University of Maryland product played in 16 games as a rookie, too, totaling 69 tackles, four tackles for loss, one interception, and five passes defensed after moving into the starting lineup midseason.

Kameron Kelly, an undrafted free agent in 2018 out of San Diego State, has been practicing in Davis' place with Pittsburgh's first-team defense. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys shortly after the draft but was released before training camp, then played with the San Diego Fleet of the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.
