Germany upset Team USA 113-111 Friday, ensuring that the Americans can't win a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. It marks the second straight World Cup in which Team USA won't even win the silver medal. While the Americans were the clear favorites at the start of the tournament, Team USA coach Steve Kerr doesn't sound stunned that his squad came up short.

It's no secret that Team USA doesn't dominate international play in the way that it did three decades ago when NBA players started representing their home country. Long gone are the days of the 1992 Dream Team, which beat its opponents by an average of 44 points on the way to winning an Olympic gold medal. The Americans sleepwalked to a gold medal when Kerr was an active player.

“The game has been globalized over the last 30 years or so,” Kerr said at a press conference after Germany defeated Team USA. “These games are difficult. This is not 1992 anymore. Players are better all over the world, teams are better, and it's not easy to win a World Cup or an Olympic game.”

Germany has several quality NBA players to lead it. Dennis Schroder started for the Los Angeles Lakers at point guard during their run to the Western Conference Finals just a few months ago. Franz Wagner scored 22 points for Germany and might be a future All-Star. Mo Wagner and Daniel Theis are also NBA rotation players.

Not all of the best players the U.S. has to offer played for Team USA, though it's still the most talented team in the World Cup. Four players on the roster have made an NBA All-Star team.
