The high points for the Houston Texans were few and far in between amidst an injury-riddled 2017 NFL season. Among the notable highlights was the induction of former star wide receiver Andre Johnson into the Texans Ring of Honor.

Unfortunately, his ceremony came amidst the controversial remarks made by team owner Bob McNair. Johnson said during an appearance on former teammate Arian Foster’s podcast, that he even considered not going through with the induction, via the Houston Chronicle:

“I wouldn’t say it surprised me, but I just didn’t like it,” Johnson said. “To know you did so much for a franchise and to have him come out and say something like that. At the end of the day, you don’t make the money if we don’t run it. If you take some people off the street and put them in there, nobody’s coming to watch that. It was real touchy with me. I even thought about not doing the ring ceremony.”

McNair made headlines when he compared the player protests to “inmates running the prison”. Although he apologized soon thereafter, he has since backtracked by saying he wishes he had never done so in the first place.

Despite the controversy at the time, Johnson decided to follow through, and rightfully so. Not only is he the most iconic player in Texans history, but he was arguably the best wideout of his generation. He currently holds every franchise receiving record imaginable including career receptions, yards, and touchdowns. That said, it would have been a disservice to both him and the fans not to be recognized as such due to the arrogance of the team owner.

Fortunately, McNair has managed to show his true colors once again which means it could only be a matter of time before Texans' star players of past, present, and future have had enough with the ownership.
