The Houston Texans have already bid farewell to cornerback Johnathan Joseph by allowing him to test free agency. It seems the secondary will continue to be a work in progress throughout the offseason.
According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans do not plan on re-signing safety Jahleel Addae:
Texans aren't expected to re-sign safety Jahleel Addae, according to league sources
Addae came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the then-San Diego Chargers prior to the 2013 campaign. He was able to find his footing and etch out an immediate role for himself in the secondary and was even part of the team's relocation to Los Angeles. He was released after six seasons with the Chargers and signed with the Texans last offseason.
Addae finished the 2019 NFL season with 45 tackles and two interceptions. He provided some much-needed depth to a Texans secondary that experienced plenty of turnover throughout the year and even managed to start in the playoffs before a knee injury ended his season.
The decision to release Addae is certainly an intriguing one considering head coach Bill O'Brien's affinity for running three-safety sets. Parting ways with such established veterans like him and Joseph only leaves more gaps to fill over the top at a time where they are trying to focus the looming extensions of quarterback Deshaun Watson and left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
It will be interesting to see if they how much resources the Texans invest in addressing this concern through free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft.
