Texas Southern's decision on a new head football coach has been postponed once again following a recent tweet from the school's Board of Regents. Dr. Kevin Granger, the Vice President of Collegiate Athletics at Texas Southern, issued a statement that was reported  by HBCU Sports on ‘X'.

“The hiring of a head football coach is a strategic decision that cannot be taken lightly,” Granger wrote. “The Board of Regents and I engaged in positive discussions over the holidays. I am excited about our new leadership's bold, strategic direction for Texas Southern University. I will be taking a few additional days to consider candidates for the coaching vacancy and will work closely with Interim President Dr. Mary Evans Sias and the Board to announce a hiring decision shortly.”

Initial reports suggested that Fred McNair, the former coach of Alcorn State, would take over at Texas Southern. McNair had a history of winning at Alcorn, winning four SWAC East titles and taking the school to two Celebration Bowls during his tenure. However, McNair's hire was anything but a done deal.

The Texas Southern Board of Regents never came to a conclusive decision on whether to hire McNair. Instead, a few members floated the name of NFL and Houston legend Andre Johnson, who previously indicated his interest in coaching the team. As of now, they are the top two candidates for the job.

Also of note, Ed Reed also publicly expressed interest in the job via his Twitter page. Since Reed's unceremonious exit from Bethune-Cookman in January, he has publicly angled for several open HBCU football positions including Morehouse College.

Nevertheless, the Texas Southern head coaching search has garnered the attention of the HBCU world, and the decision from the Board of Regents could have some interesting effects on the HBCU football world come 2024.
