All good things must come to an end. And The Boys is no exception.

Eric Kripke, the developer of the popular Prime Video series, posted on X on Tuesday that Season 5 will be the last. In the unfortunate update, it's pretty well confirmed that the superhero antics are indeed coming to a close.

“#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!” he wrote. “Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun!”

The post features a blacked-out script indicating the end of the season. The bottom reads, “SEE YOU FOR OUR FINAL SEASON, MOTHERF——RS!”

The Boys is a satirical superhero series that shows what happens when too much power can go to one's head. It features a cast of characters with remarkable strengths that most of them use in an unethical way. However, the public looks at them as heroes. The superpowered people work at Vought International, which markets them in various outfits and personas, known as the Seven.

It stars Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie Campbell), Anthony Starr (Homelander), Erin Moriarty (Starlight), Dominique McElligott (Queen Maeve), Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Laz Alonso (M.M), Chace Crawford (the Deep), Tomer Capone (Frenchie), Karen Fukuhara (the Female), Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir), Elisabeth Shue (Madelyn Stillwell), Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett), Aya Cash (Klra Risinger), Claudia Doumit (Nadia Khayat), and Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy).

Season one, which consisted of eight episodes, premiered in 2019 and has been going strong (like, superhero-strong) ever since.

Season 4 is coming soon

As for now, we have The Boys Season 4 to look forward to.

Variety reports that it's the “darkest season yet.” The premise starts with a focus on Homelander (Antony Starr) being on trial. The Captain American-looking archvillian does something publically bad, which causes him to lose support.

Alison Herman of Variety wrote, “The Boys balances this heart-sinking sensation with its usual flair for lewd, rude comedy and an ear for inane corporate messaging. Amazon itself gets a nudge when a bloody fight spills over into a Marvelous Mrs. Maisel-themed bat mitzvah; a push to promote diversity in the Seven is dubbed Black At It. But while the show began primarily as a parody of oppressively dominant superhero franchised, it's become an indictment of an overlapping series of systems and the noxious ideology that underlies them. Season 4 starts to show the strain of that effort, both on the viewer's tolerance for despair and the series itself.”

Meanwhile, IGN's Matt Donato wrote of the new episodes, “The Boys Season 4 is a solid crash back to earth for Prime Video's anti-superhero satire. With so much ground to cover — both ongoing stories and new plotlines — Season 4 could have benefited from being a couple episodes longer. Everyone in Butcher's crew is dealing with some messed-up issues while Homelander's co-conspirators tiptoe around Vought Tower, trying to keep their bodies in one piece. Season 4 feels like a fuse slowly fizzling toward the last episode, but the fireworks it ignites are relatively dinky compared to what The Boys has done in the past. Maybe that sounds harsher than it should because there's still plenty of what I love about The Boys packed into a season scarred by sorrow, heartbreak, and so much angst. It's just hard to be as excited about Season 4 after the back-to-back bangers of Season 3 and Gen V Season 1.”
