It's been a rough year for everyone around the world. One thing that kept us all company during this tough time in human history is a wide array of video games. The Game Awards 2020 honors the game developers that forged on to deliver the best games possible during one of the worst times in recent memory.

Game of the Year Nominees

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizon — Nintendo
  • Doom Eternal — id Software / Bethesda Softworks
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake — Square Enix
  • Ghosts of Tsushima —  Sucker Punch Productions / Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Hades — Supergiant Games
  • The Last of Us Part II — Naughty Dog / Sony Interactive Entertainment

This year's nominees for Game of the Year was a crazy spread of different genres and experiences. All of the games nominated deserve the award but there can only be one winner. Legendary director Christopher Nolan appeared as the presenter for the prestigious award.

The Last of Us Part II walks away with the Game of the Year award along with several other awards across the night.

The Last of Us Part II began the night holding the most nominations out of any other nominee. A total of 11 awards were within reach of the Naughtydog developed apocalypse survival sequel. Alongside Game of the Year, TLOU Part II also took home Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Performance, Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Action/Adventure. It was a clean sweep for Naughtydog who also dominated the awards scene back in 2013 when the first The Last of Us launched.

It's almost ironic that a game that features a world ravaged by a global pandemic wins Game of the Year. It's a welcome reunion for the franchise to get the recognition it deserves in its second outing. Congratulations to all the infected-slayers and survivors at Naughtydog and Sony Interactive Entertainment.
