If the Minnesota Timberwolves keep the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft, most league insiders expect the Wolves to take Georgia guard Anthony Edwards, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN.

The Timberwolves could pair Edwards in the backcourt with All-Star point guard D'Angelo Russell. The Wolves acquired Russell at the 2020 trade deadline from the Golden State Warriors for Andrew Wiggins.

While Minnesota would love to pull off a blockbuster move and team up Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker with close friends Russell and Towns, Phoenix isn't going for that. Most league insiders expect the Wolves to take Georgia guard Anthony Edwards, considered the best positional fit among the top three prospects (including National Basketball League guard LaMelo Ball and Memphis center James Wiseman).

In 32 games at Georgia in 2019-20, Edwards averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He also shot 40.2 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from beyond the arc and 77.2 percent from the free-throw line.

The Timberwolves won only 19 games this season before the campaign was suspended in March due to COVID-19. Minnesota wasn't invited to Walt Disney World for the resumption of the season since they had the second-worst record in the West.

Russell and superstar big man Karl-Anthony Towns are eager to lead the Timberwolves to the playoffs in the rugged Western Conference. Getting Edwards would be a good step, but the Wolves have a lot of moves to make before they can call themselves a postseason club.

The Timberwolves have only made the playoffs once since 2004. That was in 2017-18 when Jimmy Butler led the team to 47 wins.
