Jimmy Butler and the Minnesota Timberwolves have a strained relationship, to put it lightly. The disgruntled star is trying to force his way out of Minnesota via trade, and it seems like ownership is ready to move on. Just when it appeared this relationship could not get any worse, Butler made a scene at his first practice and sat down to air his grievances in an interview with Rachel Nichols of ESPN.
When Kent Youngblood of the Star Tribune asked Butler if his relationship with Minnesota's management has changed, Butler's responded, “No.”
That answer could mean Minnesota was not upset about the interview and didn't bring that up with Butler. Or it could mean that their relationship was already in tatters and it couldn't have possibly gotten any worse. I think it's safe to assume the latter. Butler himself has admitted he doesn't see any possible way of repairing the relationship.
The NBA has a knack for giving its fans soap-opera type drama. Long and painful breakups are all too common. That being said, everything going on in Minnesota remains a mystery. The front office doesn't always appear to be on the same page while Butler is going rogue.
The Timberwolves are a better team with Butler on the court, but it's probably best to move him as soon as possible for the long-term future of the organization. For now, though, it looks like the four-time All-Star will be suiting up for Minnesota's regular-season opener against the San Antonio Spurs.
Buckle up.
