Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns took issue with reports suggesting he was returning to the floor Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Shams Charania reported Towns was expected to be back in action against the Clippers after missing 13 games whilst recovering from a bout with COVID-19. Towns responded in kind, saying he intended to go through shootaround prior to making a determination on his status. The former No. 1 overall pick added “underlying conditions and Covid don't mix well.”

Towns' battle with COVID-19 is especially personal.

The All-Star Timberwolves center lost his mother, Jacqueline Cruz, due to complications from the virus back in March of last year. Towns also revealed in December he had lost seven members of his family to COVID, including his mother.

Towns announced he had contracted the virus in mid-January, imploring others to take necessary precautions:

“We cannot stop the spread of this virus alone, it must be a group effort by all of us,” Towns tweeted at the time. “It breaks my heart that my family, and particularly my father and sister continue to suffer from the anxiety that comes along with this diagnosis as we know all too well what the end result could be.”

The Timberwolves have struggled mightily in Towns' absence. Minnesota is dead-last in the Western Conference at 6-18 on the season.

But while the franchise could certainly use a boost from Towns as he ramps things up, it also wants to ensure the young star is healthy before rushing back to the hardwood.

Towns is also taking things step by step, and will see how he feels in shootaround before deciding whether to give it a go.
