For those wondering why Robert Covington didn't start against the New Orleans Pelicans, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders revealed that the swingman was ‘late for something.'

Though Covington didn't start, he played 30 minutes and chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds in their 107-99 loss. Andrew Wiggins led the team with 27 points and seven rebounds, while Gorgui Dieng added 13 points and eight rebounds.

The loss marks the Wolves' eighth straight. They currently sport a 10-16 record for 11th place in the West. After a strong start, things have taken a downturn for the Timberwolves. Much of their early success can be attributed to Wiggins who has seemingly rejuvenated his young career.

But their long string of losses is a clear indication that more has to be done if they want to remain relevant in the West. It'll be a lot tougher in the next few games as Karl-Anthony Towns has been tagged as ‘day-to-day' with a knee sprain.

The February trade deadline is approaching fast and it created rumors involving the Timberwolves. Several reports reveal that Minnesota might be interested in acquiring Dennis Smith Jr from the New York Knicks. The firing of David Fizdale has seemingly forced Smith out of the lineup and so the Knicks might be open to shipping him out.

Covington, meanwhile, is reportedly being eyed by a few contender teams. His defense and 3-point shooting are his main asset and elite teams have taken notice.
