Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel announced that they have lost starting strong safety Johnathan Cyprien for the season due to a torn ACL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Known primarily as a hard-hitting, run-stuffing safety, the 28-year-old Cyprien signed a four-year, $25 million contract with Tennessee last season in free agency. Although, he missed six games in his debut season primarily due to a hamstring injury. He played and started 10 games for the Titans, making 57 tackles with one sack.

Prior to signing with the Titans, Cyprien spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played 60 games in Jacksonville (all starts), and recorded 449 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks, and four forced fumbles.

Cyprien’s injury is a tough blow for the Titans, who don’t possess a ton of depth at safety. Apart from starting free safety Kevin Byard, Kendrick Lewis and Brynden Trawick are only other safeties currently on the roster.

If the Titans don’t bring in added reinforcements, the 30-year-old Lewis will likely be the favorite to play alongside Byard at the other safety spot with Cyprien out. Lewis last played in the NFL in 2016 with the Baltimore Ravens after he went unsigned during the entire 2017 season.
