The Tennessee Titans have told veteran running back DeMarco Murray that he will be released, according to Jim Wyatt of the team's official website.

Murray has spent the last two seasons with Tennessee after a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles and four years with the Dallas Cowboys. After rushing for 1,289 yards in 2016 as the Titans' lead back, he split carries with Derrick Henry in 2017. With Murray gone, the bulk of the load while likely fall on the Alabama product's shoulders moving forward.

Tennessee's general manager thanked the three-time Pro Bowler for his contributions to the franchise. Via Wyatt:

“I want to thank DeMarco for his contributions as a Titan, not only for what he did on the field but also in the locker room and in the community,” Titans general manager Jon Robinson said in a statement. “He was a pro in every facet and we wish him and his family the best moving forward.”

Murray was productive throughout his two years with the Titans, but injuries kept him off the field for large portions of 2017. He missed the team's regular season finale (a postseason-clinching win over the rival Jacksonville Jaguars) before not suiting up for either of Tennessee's playoff games against the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots.

With the cut, the Titans will get back all of the $6.5 million in salary and bonus that Murray was owed for the 2018 season.

In Murray's last year with Dallas, he led the NFL in rushing attempts (392), rushing yards (1,845), and rushing touchdowns (13) while helping the Cowboys reach the divisional round of the playoffs.
