When you think of NFL cards, guys like Tom Brady will jump to the forefront of your mind, but not always for the best of reasons.
Any collection would not be complete without the presence of autographed cards. In essence, they are those that contain signatures of NFL players hobbyists can pull straight from the pack or purchase from the market. While most signatures on these autos are passable, sweet-looking even, there are those that stand out for all the wrong reasons.
We take a look below at some NFL cards with the worst-looking autographs and the players who made them happen. And yes, this includes Tom Brady.
Chase Young
When it comes to playing defense, NFL fans can count on Chase Young to get the job done. Bagging last season’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award and being named to the All-Rookie Team means Young is straight money, even in his first year in the league.
His signature game, on the other hand, may need some polishing. While Young’s 2020 Spectra Rookie Nike Swoosh Patch Auto One of One is indeed a massive pull, the signature on it doesn’t match the card’s rarity. His small inscription doesn’t even look like a proper signature. Even if that’s the case, this card recently sold for $10,000 on eBay. Anyway, is this the season he gets his hands on Tom Brady?
Ceedee Lamb
Along with Young, Ceedee Lamb is one of the standouts from the 2020 NFL Draft Class. Taken by the Dallas Cowboys using the 17th pick, Lamb wasted no time by making some big plays on a number of occasions, including a come-from-behind win over the Atlanta Falcons.
While most auto cards boast a complete signature, Lamb’s 2020 Flawless Rookie NFL Shield Patch Auto One of One doesn’t look like one. Basically, it’s a couple of loops drawn together to lazily form a signature. Nonetheless, this Ceedee Lamb card still fetched $10,000 on the market.
Patrick Mahomes II
If the NBA has Luka Doncic as its potential face for the coming years, the NFL has Patrick Mahomes II to carry that standard when Tom Brady hangs it up. Even with four seasons under his belt, the 25-year old quarterback has managed to lead Kansas City Chiefs to multiple Super Bowl appearances, and even winning one.
While another Patrick Mahomes autographed card looks like a winner, his 2020 Legacy Patch Auto 7/10 doesn’t share that same distinction. Looking at the stickered auto and hobbyists will see three figures written on it. From the looks of the card, it seemed Mahomes didn’t put too much effort into signing them.
Tom Brady
There’s no doubt left on anybody’s mind that Tom Brady is indeed football’s GOAT. After entering the league in 2000, the quarterback launched a campaign that resulted in seven Super Bowl victories, three MVP awards, and countless records named after him.
As prestigious as Brady’s career can be, his on-card signature is a different matter altogether. A good example is his 2020 Select Silver Signature card, which has his autograph on it. At first look, it seems like a child made the inscription instead of a legendary football star. But for most collectors, the focus will be on GOAT himself and the rarity of this Tom Brady card, which is now valued at $27,000.
When thinking about it, how a player signs his autographed cards are way beyond the control of anyone. This includes Tom Brady and everyone else mentioned. Nevertheless, it’s always better if these guys made an effort to inscribe their cards with a proper signature to fully realize their value.
