The Minnesota Twins are looking to bounce back from what was a disappointing 2021 campaign and made a key move to boost their rotation on Sunday. According to reports from Mark Sheldon, the Twins pulled off a blockbuster trade to land Sonny Gray from the Cincinnati Reds.

As part of the deal, the Twins will also acquire minor-league reliever Chase Petty, who was the organization's first-round pick in the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft. He was the 26th overall pick and the 19-year-old was tabbed as a top-10 prospect within Minnesota's ranks.

Sunday's move comes on the heels of another big acquisition for Minnesota, who traded for Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Saturday in a deal with the Rangers.

This is a huge get for the Twins, while it also allows the Reds to free up some money. Last season in Cincinnati, Gray started 26 games, logging a 7-9 record. He had a 4.19 ERA across 135.1 innings on the mound and struck out 155 batters. The two-time All-Star will instantly step in and improve a Twins' starting rotation that had an ERA of 4.83 last year. Manager Rocco Baldelli will be pleased to have landed such a big-named hurler to add to his rotation, which is severely lacking of late.

The addition of Gray is their second move to bolster the rotation, having signed Dylan Bundy before the MLB lockout back in December. Trading for Gray suggests the Twins intend to compete in the AL Central this year, where the Chicago White Sox are currently considered favorites heading into the regular season.

As it stands, pitchers in contention to make Minnesota's rotation would include Bundy, Gray, Griffin Jax, Joe Ryan, Bailey Ober, and Randy Dobnak.
