Curtis Blaydes is coming off of an excellent knockout win over Chris Daukaus at UFC Columbus on Saturday. The heavyweight contender showed excellent striking and big power against the tough Daukaus.
Curtis Blaydes kept it respectful but he doesn't believe Chris Daukaus is fighting in the right division. The UFC heavyweight appears quite small according to Blaydes and should consider dropping down.
“I think honestly, no shade, he should probably drop down to light heavyweight,” Blaydes told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight at UFC on ESPN 33. “Not everyone’s a heavyweight. It’s OK. Just cause you weigh 245 does not mean you’re a heavyweight, so he should drop down.”
Many felt like Chris Daukaus didn't have the frame to become an elite heavyweight. There were many fans calling for the UFC heavyweight to consider making the move down to light heavyweight.
Curtis Blaydes echoed those sentiments himself as he noted that, although Chris Daukaus is skilled, he lacks the true size to beat the best heavyweights in the UFC. It doesn't come from a place of disrespect though, just something the contender noticed during their fight.
“I don’t think (he can beat the best heavyweights),” Blaydes said. “And that’s no shade. He’s skilled, but you have to be big, and you have to be strong. That’s like a pre-requisite. That’s like a flyweight that’s not fast. You can’t. That doesn’t work.”
It will have to be seen what Chris Daukaus chooses to do after his loss at UFC Columbus. Curtis Blaydes will find himself in an excellent position to eventually fight for the title.
