Colby Covington has made it no secret that he wants the next title shot after beating Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. Kamaru Usman has beaten him two times already and a trilogy would be a bit difficult to justify.

Kamaru Usman recently spoke to ESPN and revealed what Colby Covington would have to do in order to get the trilogy fight done. The Nigerian UFC champion wants to see him take on some big contenders.

“Right now it doesn’t make sense. Go out there and sell yourself. There’s a guy in the division that everyone is kinda giving all this hoopla about, so go out there. There’s a couple more fights you need to take on – you haven’t fought Gilbert Burns, you haven’t fought Vicente Luque, you haven’t fought Chimaev. So, yeah, go out there and get a couple of wins. Then, continue to sell yourself, and you can stake that claim and people won’t deny you.”

Colby Covington has yet to fight some of the current top-5 welterweights and Jorge Masvidal is not one of them as he is ranked in the top-10. Belal Muhammad is also a name Kamaru Usman mentioned and there is actually a lot of beef between the two welterweights.

It will be interesting to see what the UFC does with Colby Covington going forward as he is in a very tricky spot in the welterweight. Kamaru Usman is currently expected to defend the welterweight title in July against Leon Edwards, although the fight is not official yet.
