The NFL is full of surprises, and on Sunday it came in different forms, none of which broke more hearts than Chicago Bears kicker Cody Parkey’s missed field-goal attempt during the dying seconds of their home game against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here’s a replay of Parkey’s failed field-goal try that caromed off the left upright, via Adam Lefkoe of Bleacher Report.

Parkey tried that ill-fated kick from 43 yards away, his longest attempt of the game, but it wasn’t out of his capabilities. In fact, he finished the 2018 regular season with an excellent 9-of-12 conversion success on tries from 40-49 yards. He also had a successful score from at least 50 yards away.

Parkey was looking like the contest’s MVP early, as he buried all three of his previous three field-goal attempts, which all helped keep Philadelphia at bay and Chicago in the game. After the Eagles scored the first touchdown of the game to put themselves in front, 10-6, in the second quarter, Parkey was the next one to put points on the board with a 34-yard kick to cut Philadelphia’s lead down to a point.

It’s not quite on the level of Steve Bartman’s, but Parkey’s miss is going to linger in Chicago’s sports lore for a long time.
