There are a number of reasons why the Los Angeles Lakers failed to beat the San Antonio Spurs Monday night at home. Among them is the fact that LeBron James was not able to knock down this potential game-winning two-point jumper in the dying seconds of the game’s overtime.

It was the Lakers’ last attempt to steal the victory. And for LeBron James, it was his last chance to redeem himself in the game after missing two free throws late in overtime that would’ve sealed the contest in favor of the Lakers.

With the Lakers ahead, 143-142, with less than 15 seconds in overtime, James took a foul from Spurs forward Rudy Gay, giving the four-time league MVP a chance to expand the Lakers’ lead to three points. Instead, James botched both free throw attempt, thus paving the way for Spurs guard Patty Mills to knock down a go-ahead and game-winning two-point jumper on the other end of the floor off of a play designed during a timeout.

The Spurs ultimately won what was an otherwise thrilling contest, 143-142, but the Lakers do not have a reason to smile as they are now 0-3 to start the season.

James had a near triple-double stat line of 32 points, 14 assists, and eight rebounds, while Kyle Kuzma led the Lakers with 37 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists.
