Houston Rockets swingman Austin Rivers recently spoke on The Ringer to talk about the recent relocation of his father, Doc, to the city of Philadelphia and serve as the new head coach for the 76ers.

It was a rather easy decision for the former player-turned-coach to accept the role and lead the Sixers next season. He knew that the All-Star duo of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons had great potential as they almost reached the NBA Finals two years ago.

The Brett Brown-led team previously succumbed to the Toronto Raptors in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semi Finals via a last-gasp Kawhi Leonard jumper which gave his team a 92-90 victory.

Another factor that contributed to Rivers' decision was Philadelphia's location as he grew up in Chicago so choosing to coach the Sixers would put him closer to home. According to Austin Rivers, the Eastern Conference is also less stacked as compared to the West and his father previously found success with another Eastern Conference team in the Boston Celtics whom he won a title and took to a couple of trips to the NBA Finals.

The younger Rivers also thought that the Clippers wanted to head a different direction which led to the recent firing of his father and ended a seven-year partnership between the two sides. Doc Rivers took the Los Angeles-based squad to three trips to the Western Conference Semi Finals in a total of six playoff appearances.

Heading into the 2020-2021 NBA season, the entire Sixers organization is hoping that their new head coach will be the final piece to the puzzle and will help lead them to bring a title back to the historic franchise.
