Free agent guard Alec Burks has agreed to a 1-year deal with the Golden State Warriors after the Oklahoma City Thunder allowed him to re-consider his commitment to the team, following the trade of Paul George and impending move of franchise star Russell Westbrook, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The Thunder had given recent signings Mike Muscala and Burks the choice to re-think their free agent strategy after the front office was shocked to learn Paul George wanted out right before the league's moratorium period expired. Following his trade to the Clippers, the Thunder are now primed to move their franchise star Russell Westbrook, which could only mean an effective teardown and unavoidable rebuild for the team.

Muscala chose to keep his commitment to the Thunder, while Burks opted for a chance to sign with their Western Conference rival.

“Alec was extremely appreciative about how the Thunder handled the situation and he’s looking forward to his new opportunity,” said Burks' agent J.R. Hensley.

The move will allow the 6-foot-6 shooting guard to slide into the very hole that bench cogs like Quinn Cook left behind after signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. Shaun Livingston's impending retirement could also free up another spot in the rotation, as only Stephen Curry, new acquisition D'Angelo Russell and rookie Jordan Poole are primed for minutes in the backcourt.

Burks should be able to see some decent minutes as a capable slasher and improved shooter, likely coming off the bench as a second or third option. His ability to make plays could put him in a Livingston-like role, as a big-bodied backup point guard capable of getting his own shot.
