NBA players of today have been very vocal about their stance on different social issues. Their social media accounts are the primary platform they use to voice out their opinions, which they share to their millions of followers. Unlike in the past, they share their thoughts more freely now, but are still mindful of the repercussions they might face should their comments be controversial or against the values being promoted by the NBA or their teams.

Kevin Durant is one of them, and has also noticed that there are more players like him who do the same. He discussed it, via Daniel Mano of The Mercury News, and gave a lot of credit to the ones who have been active in helping out communities as well.

“A lot of guys do so much in their communities,” Durant began. “It’s going to take us a long time to see some change. But if you’re putting in the work every single day you can kinda feel as though you did you part. We probably won’t see the results. But we can kind of just lay that foundation down. I think a lot of guys are doing that, on the low too. You should go in those communities and see what they’re doing. They’re changing them and they’re giving a lot of hope to kids. …

“I’ve seen so many players who give so much hope to people — not just athletes, but to people. …

“The community that you play in, grab that community and bring them together. The community you went to college in, grab them and bring them together. That’s the power we have as athletes.”

The former MVP and four-time scoring champion understands that it is not their job to be as active as they are, but still they are using their influence as popular professional athletes to raise awareness on different matters concerning the lives of many.

They have been instrumental in promoting positive change and should be the case moving forward.
