Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry defended tennis star Serena Williams for her outburst at the US Open.

Per Omnisport via Yahoo, Curry believes that Williams handled the situation well:

“I would say a championship match in terms of high-level talent on the court between those two ladies… obviously Naomi deserved to win and she played amazing,” Curry told Omnisport.

“The way Serena handled the situation, I think she handled it with such grace and class.

Curry, however, reminded everyone that Naomi Osaka, too, should get the attention she deserves:

“At the end of the day, I hope everybody understands and celebrates Naomi because she's the US Open champion and that's pretty dope.”

To recall, in Williams' US Open final defeat against Osaka, the latter called umpire Carlos Ramos “liar” and a “thief.” This was after Ramos issued a code violation to Williams whom she believed was receiving coaching instructions from Patrick Mouratoglou who was in the stands. Williams then destroyed her tennis racquet which led to a point deduction.

Curry added that he can relate to the what Williams experienced. In a game where a lot is at stake, it's tough to control one's emotions. But it's also imperative that an athlete does not let these emotions get in the way of winning.

“You're going to have reactions. That's what sport is all about.

“But the biggest goal in the winners is usually to stay locked in on why they're out there on the court in the first place and not let anybody try to get in the way.”
