The violent shooting incident that happened in Parkland, Florida last week has caught the attention of people not just in the country but all over the world as well. That includes NBA players and coaches, who have raised awareness and making it known that they condemn such acts where numerous lives are lost.

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was asked recently to give his thoughts about a group of students who have been protesting for stronger gun legislation. They gave them a lot of high praise for fighting for their cause, and also said, in a video posted by Mark Medina of The Mercury News, that he is encouraged by their actions.

“I think it’s phenomenal. What these kids are doing is heroic. It’s heartfelt and I think it’s the beginning of some change. I would believe that…”

“I feel very encouraged. We’ve got generation that’s grown up with these school shootings and mass shootings, and they’re fed up…”

Kerr has never been shy to speak about different social issues the country is facing whether it may be controversial or not. He is showing that members of the NBA community can also be instruments for positive change, and can use the game of basketball as a platform to promote it.

The incident in Parkland is expected to continue being a much talked about topic in the coming weeks. With the protests the young students have been doing, it could inspire more professional athletes from different sports, and even celebrities, to speak up against these acts of violence and let the everyone know that there’s no room for that anywhere in the world.
